Is AI Search Sending You Customers? 7 GEO Metrics to Track in 2026
AI search has no single ranking. Use this seven-metric GEO scorecard to track Google AI impressions, citations, referrals, answer accuracy and qualified leads.
AI search does not give a website one permanent ranking. To know whether Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is working, measure visibility, citations, referral traffic, answer accuracy and qualified conversions together.
The goal is not to collect impressive screenshots. The goal is to learn whether the right customers can find your business, understand it correctly and take the next step.
Key takeaways
- There is no single “GEO rank.” Different AI and search platforms expose different data.
- Combine official platform reports with a fixed set of real buyer questions and your website analytics.
- Treat assessments, enquiries and booked calls as the final measure—not raw mentions alone.
What should GEO measurement tell you?
A useful GEO report answers three questions: Are AI systems finding your website? Are they representing your business accurately? Does that visibility produce valuable actions?
Use these seven metrics to answer those questions without pretending that one dashboard can see everything.
1. Google AI impressions
Start with the number of times your pages appear in Google’s generative search experiences. Google’s Generative AI performance reports in Search Console can show impressions, cited pages, countries, devices and changes over time for eligible sites. Read Google’s Search Console announcement.
If that report is not available in your account, continue monitoring the standard Search Console Performance report. Record which pages gain impressions after you improve their clarity, evidence and internal links.
2. Citations and cited-page coverage
A citation means an AI experience displayed one of your URLs as a source. Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance report includes citation totals, cited pages and sampled grounding queries. Microsoft warns that a citation count does not show authority or placement inside an answer. See Bing’s AI Performance guidance.
Track both total citations and the number of different pages cited. Several cited service, research and support pages show broader topic coverage than one frequently cited article.
3. Brand mention rate
Create a fixed panel of 20 buyer questions, such as “Which GEO agency helps service businesses?” and “How can a company prepare its website for AI search?”
Run the same questions across the AI systems your customers use. Mention rate is the percentage of questions where your brand appears. Keep the prompts stable so monthly comparisons remain meaningful.
4. Citation share against real competitors
For each tracked question, record which brands and domains are cited. Citation share is your portion of citations across that fixed prompt set.
Select three to five genuine alternatives serving a similar customer. Do not compare your business with every marketing company on the internet.
5. AI referral sessions
OpenAI says links from ChatGPT Search include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which helps publishers track visits. It also recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot when you want public pages to be eligible for discovery and citation. Read OpenAI’s publisher guidance.
In Google Analytics, open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition. Review Session source and Landing page to see which AI referrals arrived and where they entered. See Google’s acquisition-report guide.
Referral data is useful but incomplete. Someone may discover your business in an AI answer and return later through branded search or a direct visit.
6. Engagement and qualified conversions
Compare AI-referred sessions using engagement rate, assessment starts, completed forms and booked calls.
For GAiO Engine, the valuable path is: Article → GEO assessment → consultation → suitable paid engagement.
Ten relevant visits that produce two qualified assessments can be more useful than hundreds of visits that leave without acting.
7. Answer accuracy and sentiment
A brand mention can still be harmful when the answer describes the company incorrectly. For each priority question, grade the answer as accurate, partly accurate or incorrect. Then record whether the description is positive, neutral or risky.
Save the exact claim and cited source. This creates a practical correction list for your website, profiles, third-party mentions and support content.
Why should you measure more than once?
AI answers can change between runs, prompts and dates. Research on GEO measurement recommends repeated observation instead of relying on one result. Read “Don’t Measure Once” on arXiv.
A citation screenshot proves that one result happened. It does not prove permanent visibility. Compare rolling monthly trends using a fixed prompt set.
A 30-minute monthly GEO scorecard
- Run the same 20 buyer questions across your selected AI platforms.
- Record brand mentions, cited domains, answer accuracy and competitors.
- Review Google AI visibility data in Search Console when available.
- Review Bing citations, cited pages and grounding queries.
- Filter Google Analytics for AI referral sessions and landing pages.
- Count assessment starts, completed forms and booked calls.
- Compare the current month with the previous two months.
A small, consistent scorecard is more useful than a large dashboard nobody trusts.
Common GEO measurement mistakes
- Treating one AI answer as a stable ranking.
- Counting irrelevant brand mentions as commercial visibility.
- Reporting citations without checking answer accuracy.
- Tracking traffic without assessment or booking conversions.
- Changing the prompt set every month.
- Publishing more content before fixing crawlability, canonicals and internal links.
