AI Search Visibility Audit: 25 Checks for Google AI, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity

Can AI search systems find, understand and reference your website? Use this practical 25-point audit to check crawl access, search eligibility, answer quality, entity signals and AI visibility measurement.

Can AI Find Your Website? Run This 25-Point AI Search Visibility Audit

AI systems cannot recommend or cite a page they cannot retrieve, understand or trust. A website becomes more ready for AI search when its important pages are crawlable, eligible for search, clear enough to answer specific questions, supported by evidence and connected to a consistent business identity.

This audit checks those conditions across Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT Search, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and other web-connected assistants. It also explains how to think about Grok and Codex without pretending that either has a public website-ranking formula.

No checklist can guarantee a ranking, citation or recommendation. Use this one to find preventable problems, create a baseline and decide what to improve first.

How to Score Your AI Search Visibility

Give your website one point for every completed check. Test your most important service page and one strong educational page instead of scoring only the homepage.

Strong foundation. Focus on original evidence, third-party authority and ongoing measurement.

Promising but inconsistent. Fix the missing technical and content signals before publishing at a faster pace.

Significant gaps. AI systems may be able to find parts of the site but struggle to understand or trust the complete business.

Start with access. indexability and clear core pages. More blog posts will not solve a blocked or confusing website.

The score measures readiness, not guaranteed visibility. AI answers vary by platform, location, freshness, model and wording of the question.

Can ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity and Google Access Your Website?

Start with access. Search optimization cannot repair a page that returns an error, sits behind a login or is blocked by a firewall.

Check 1: Important pages are publicly available

Open each priority page in a private browser window. It should load without an account, consent wall or action that hides the main information. Public service details, prices where appropriate, contact information and evidence should not exist only inside an image or downloadable file.

Check 2: Priority pages return a successful response

Confirm that important URLs return a normal 200 response. Redirect loops, repeated 403 errors, soft 404 pages and server failures can stop crawlers and user-requested retrieval tools before they reach the answer.

Check 3: Robots.txt reflects your real access policy

Review robots.txt by user agent and purpose. Do not copy a large allowlist from a random blog without understanding it. Search retrieval, user-requested fetching and model training can use different controls.

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, the important search crawler is Googlebot. OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot access is important for inclusion in ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. Anthropic documents Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User for user-requested retrieval. Perplexity documents PerplexityBot for search discovery and Perplexity-User for user-requested access.

Check 4: Your CDN and firewall allow legitimate crawlers

A permissive robots.txt file is not enough if Cloudflare, another firewall, your host or a bot-protection service blocks the request. Review security events and server logs for 401, 403, 429 and 5xx responses. Where a provider publishes IP ranges, validate both the user agent and official IP information instead of trusting a user-agent string alone.

Check 5: Important information is readable as text

Place the facts a customer needs in the page's visible HTML text. Do not hide the service explanation inside a graphic, video, canvas element or client-side interaction. Use descriptive headings, meaningful link text and helpful alternative text for images.

Which AI Crawlers Should You Allow?

Allow the search and user-retrieval agents that support the experiences where you want to be found, subject to your legal, licensing, privacy and security requirements.

The important distinction is purpose:

Googlebot supports Google Search, including eligibility for Google's AI search features.

OAI-SearchBot supports discovery for ChatGPT Search. GPTBot is a separate control associated with model training.

Claude-SearchBot supports Claude search quality. Claude-User supports retrieval initiated by a Claude user. ClaudeBot is associated with model development.

PerplexityBot supports Perplexity search results. Perplexity-User supports retrieval for a user's request.

Google-Extended is a control related to certain uses in Gemini Apps and Vertex AI. Google says it does not control inclusion in Google Search and is not a Google Search ranking signal.

Always check the provider's current documentation before changing production rules because bot names, IP ranges and behavior can change.

Does a Page Need to Rank on Google Before It Appears in AI Overviews?

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. It does not need to hold a specific traditional ranking position, but meeting the technical requirements does not guarantee that Google will crawl, index or show it.

Check 6: The page is indexable

Make sure the page does not contain an accidental noindex directive. Use Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool to compare the live page with the version Google processed.

Check 7: Canonical signals identify the preferred URL

Each important page should have a sensible canonical URL. Do not split the same answer across duplicate URLs with conflicting canonicals, parameters or near-identical versions.

Check 8: The XML sitemap is current and focused

Include preferred, indexable URLs and remove deleted, redirected or blocked pages. Submit the sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

Check 9: Internal links lead to the page

A page should not depend on the sitemap alone. Link to it from relevant service pages, topic hubs and related articles with anchor text that describes what the reader will find.

Check 10: The search snippet and page experience are useful

Write a unique page title and meta description that match the visible content. Keep the mobile layout readable, the main content stable and the page reasonably fast. Avoid intrusive elements that cover the answer.

What Makes Content Easy for AI Systems to Answer and Cite?

Answer the main question clearly, then support the answer with evidence and useful detail. Short paragraphs help scanning, but short content is not automatically better. The page must be complete enough to resolve the user's task.

Check 11: One page has one clear primary purpose

Use a specific title and one main heading. A page called "Services" gives a retrieval system less context than "Generative Engine Optimization Services for B2B Websites."

Check 12: The first paragraph gives a direct answer

Do not force readers through a long introduction. Define the topic or solve the immediate problem in two or three sentences, then explain conditions, exceptions and next steps.

Check 13: The page covers the natural follow-up questions

Research the questions buyers ask before, during and after a decision. Useful patterns include:

- What is it?

- How does it work?

- Who is it for?

- What does it cost?

- How long does it take?

- What are the risks and limitations?

- How does it compare with the alternatives?

- What proof should a buyer request?

Do not create dozens of thin pages for tiny variations of the same question. Build one strong page when the questions share the same intent.

Check 14: Important claims have evidence

Link to primary sources for platform rules, standards, research and statistics. Name the source, explain what it supports and include the publication or update date when freshness matters. Never invent a statistic or cite a source you did not review.

Check 15: The page adds information competitors cannot easily copy

Include a real process, original test, customer-safe example, annotated screenshot, benchmark, expert observation or decision framework. Google's current guidance emphasizes valuable, non-commodity content rather than summaries that merely repeat what is already online.

Why Do AI Tools Mention Competitors but Not Your Brand?

The usual problem is not a secret AI tag. A competitor may have clearer category language, stronger pages for the question, more independent evidence, a better-established web presence or fewer technical barriers.

Check 16: Your business identity is consistent

Use the same official business name, domain, service descriptions, location and contact details across the website and legitimate business profiles. Clearly state what the company does, who it serves and where it operates.

Check 17: Trust pages are complete

Publish useful About, Contact, Services, Methodology, Privacy and Terms pages. Give articles a real author or responsible organization, along with relevant expertise and an honest updated date.

Check 18: Structured data matches the visible page

Use appropriate supported schema, such as Organization, Article, BreadcrumbList, Service or LocalBusiness when it accurately describes the page. Validate it and keep it consistent with visible content.

Schema can clarify entities and qualify a page for supported search features, but more markup does not buy an AI citation. Google says no special AI schema is required for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

Check 19: Important claims are corroborated beyond your own site

Earn relevant reviews, expert mentions, partnerships, directory listings and editorial coverage through real work. Independent sources can help a system confirm that the business exists and that its claims are credible. Avoid paid mention schemes, fake reviews and mass-produced guest posts.

Do You Need llms.txt to Rank in AI Search?

No major platform has established llms.txt as a universal ranking switch. Google explicitly says publishers do not need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode. An llms.txt file may still be useful as an experimental directory for documentation or agent navigation, but it should not replace crawlable pages, internal links, sitemaps or strong content.

Check 20: Search access and training preferences are separated

Decide what you want to allow for search discovery, user-requested retrieval and model training. Document the decision. Do not block a search crawler accidentally because its name resembles a training crawler.

Check 21: Preview controls are intentional

Review noindex, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls. These can affect whether a page appears or how much of it can be shown. Remember that a crawler usually needs access to read a page-level control.

Check 22: There is no dependency on a GEO shortcut

Do not treat llms.txt, FAQ schema, a particular word count or repeated question headings as guaranteed ranking factors. Use formats only when they improve access, meaning or user experience. Strong SEO, original information, evidence and a clear business entity remain the foundation.

How Can You Measure AI Search Visibility?

Measure four different outcomes separately: mentions, citations, referral visits and conversions. A mention is not necessarily a linked citation, a citation is not a visit and a visit is not a customer.

Check 23: Search discovery is monitored

Verify the site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools. Track index coverage, crawl problems, queries, pages and search performance. If available for your property, use Google's generative AI performance reporting. Bing's AI Performance report can show cited pages, citation activity and grouped grounding queries across supported experiences.

Check 24: A repeatable prompt set is tracked

Create 10 to 30 questions based on real customer research. Include informational, comparison, recommendation, problem-solving, local and branded prompts. Run the same set on a fixed schedule across the platforms important to your audience.

For each prompt, record:

- Whether the brand was mentioned

- Whether the website was cited

- Which page was cited

- Whether the description was accurate

- Which competitors appeared

- Which sources supported the answer

Repeat tests because generated answers can change between runs. Look for a trend, not a single screenshot.

Check 25: AI visibility is connected to business results

Track referral traffic from AI services, engagement with cited landing pages, qualified leads and conversions. OpenAI adds a ChatGPT referral parameter to supported links, which can help with analytics, but traffic reports still do not capture every unclicked mention or citation.

Can a Website Rank in Codex or Grok?

"Rank in Codex" is not an accurate SEO target. Codex is a coding agent that can use web search when the task requires it; OpenAI does not publish an independent public website-ranking system for Codex. Make your technical documentation, code examples, product pages and source evidence accessible so web-connected tools can retrieve and evaluate them.

xAI documents that Grok's web-search tool can search the web, open pages and extract current information. However, xAI does not publish a guaranteed formula for earning a Grok citation. The practical strategy is the same: remove access barriers, answer relevant questions, maintain accurate information and build credible references across the open web.

Ten Buyer Questions Your Content Plan Should Answer

The following questions appeared repeatedly across provider documentation, search results, competitor guides and website-owner discussions. Adapt them to your customer's industry instead of copying them word for word:

1. Why is my website not appearing in ChatGPT or Google AI answers?

2. Can AI crawlers access my website?

3. Which AI bots should I allow in robots.txt?

4. Why is my firewall blocking AI crawlers?

5. Does schema markup improve AI citations?

6. Do I need an llms.txt file?

7. Why are competitors recommended instead of my business?

8. How do I make my content easier to quote and cite?

9. How do I measure mentions, citations and traffic from AI tools?

10. Can a GEO agency guarantee that an AI system will recommend me?

These are useful editorial starting points because they express a real problem and lead to an actionable answer. The strongest article will add original evidence from your own audits, tests or customer research.

A 30-Day AI Visibility Improvement Plan

Week 1: Fix access and indexing

Test your priority URLs, review robots.txt, inspect firewall logs, confirm indexability, clean the sitemap and strengthen internal links.

Week 2: Improve answer quality

Choose the five customer questions most closely connected to revenue. Improve the relevant pages with direct answers, evidence, limitations, examples and clear next steps.

Week 3: Clarify the business entity

Align the business name and service descriptions, improve About and author information, validate structured data and correct outdated third-party profiles.

Week 4: Establish measurement

Create a stable prompt set, record the baseline across your priority platforms, configure AI referral reporting and define one conversion goal for cited pages.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Search Visibility

Can anyone guarantee a ChatGPT, Claude or Google AI citation?

No. Platforms choose sources using systems that agencies and publishers do not control. A responsible GEO program improves access, relevance, clarity, evidence and authority without promising a result.

How long does GEO take?

There is no fixed timeline. Technical fixes can be completed quickly, but recrawling, reindexing, authority growth and changes in generated answers may take longer. Measure progress in monthly trends rather than expecting an immediate recommendation.

Does more content create more AI visibility?

Not automatically. Ten original, well-maintained pages that answer real buying questions can be more useful than hundreds of repetitive posts. Publishing low-value pages at scale may also conflict with Google's spam policies.

Should every heading be a question?

No. Question headings are useful when they match reader intent, but forcing every heading into a question makes the article awkward. Use a mix of clear questions, descriptive sections and steps.

What is the best first step for a small business?

Audit one service page and one educational page. Confirm that both are accessible, indexable, specific, evidence-led and connected to the business's identity. Then establish a small prompt baseline before expanding the content plan.
