Hiring a GEO Agency? Ask These 7 Questions First
Before hiring a Generative Engine Optimization agency, ask these seven questions about SEO foundations, audits, testing, evidence, reporting and guarantees.
A credible Generative Engine Optimization agency should explain what it will change, how it will measure progress and what it cannot guarantee.
Before signing a contract, use these seven questions to separate practical GEO work from attractive promises.
1. What business problem will GEO solve?
The answer should be more specific than “get mentioned by AI.”
A useful goal might be correcting inaccurate brand descriptions, improving visibility for buyer questions or converting AI-referred visitors into qualified enquiries.
Ask the agency to connect every activity with a customer decision and measurable outcome.
2. Does GEO replace SEO?
No. GEO builds on technical SEO, useful content and authority.
Google says its generative search features use core Search ranking and quality systems. Its official generative AI guidance recommends strong SEO foundations and valuable, original content—not special GEO hacks.
A provider that ignores indexing, canonical URLs, internal links and page experience is ignoring the foundation.
3. What will the GEO audit examine?
A useful audit should examine four areas:
- Access: Can search and permitted AI crawlers reach important pages?
- Clarity: Is the company, service and audience clearly defined?
- Evidence: Can important claims be verified?
- Visibility: Which questions mention or cite the business today?
The final audit should prioritize actions instead of delivering a score with no explanation.
4. Which questions and AI platforms will you test?
The agency should test questions real customers ask—not only prompts designed to produce the brand name.
Request a documented prompt set containing the exact question, platform, date, result and cited source.
The selected platforms should reflect where your customers conduct research, not whichever dashboard makes the agency look strongest.
5. How will progress be reported?
Good reporting separates brand mentions, clickable citations, factual accuracy, referral visits and customer conversions.
OpenAI’s verified publisher guidance says ChatGPT referral URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com.
Microsoft’s AI Performance documentation reports citation activity and grounding queries in supported experiences. Microsoft also clarifies that citation totals do not equal ranking or authority.
Ask to see the baseline before work begins so changes can be compared honestly.
6. What proof will you provide?
Look for a clear method, real deliverables and examples that explain their limitations.
One successful screenshot does not prove permanent visibility across every model or question.
You should own the research, content, prompt list and reports created for your business. Avoid providers that hide all work inside an unexplained private score.
7. Can you guarantee AI recommendations?
No responsible provider can guarantee a ranking, citation or recommendation from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity, Google AI or another independent platform.
A credible agency promises transparent work and measurement—not control over someone else’s system.
The 30-second hiring decision
Choose a GEO partner only if it can clearly show:
- Your starting visibility
- The pages and signals it will improve
- The customer questions it will monitor
- The metrics you will receive
- The limitations of the work
