Why Does AI Misunderstand Your Business? 5 GEO Fixes
AI describing your company incorrectly? Fix five GEO problems that affect business clarity, evidence, crawler access and AI-search monitoring.
AI tools can describe a business incorrectly when its website is unclear, outdated, difficult to access or contradicted by other public sources.
Generative Engine Optimization cannot control an AI answer, but it can make your official information easier to discover, verify and represent accurately.
Here are five problems to fix first.
1. Are your business facts inconsistent?
Your company name, services, location, contact details and descriptions should agree across your homepage, About page, service pages and trusted business profiles.
Remove outdated offers and redirect obsolete pages when appropriate. Create one clear About page stating who you are, what you provide, who you serve and where you operate.
Google’s business-details guidance recommends verifying your website in Search Console, managing your Business Profile when relevant and providing accurate organization information.
2. Do your service pages explain enough?
“We help businesses grow” is too vague. A useful service page should answer:
- What does the service do?
- Who is it designed for?
- What is included?
- What evidence supports the approach?
- What should the customer do next?
Clear service descriptions help customers make decisions and give search systems more precise information to interpret.
3. Can important claims be verified?
Replace unsupported claims with named experts, primary sources, original examples or documented case studies. Include publication dates, update dates and realistic limitations.
Google’s generative AI optimization guide recommends unique, useful content that adds genuine experience instead of recycling information already available online.
If your page makes the same claims as hundreds of competitors, there is little reason for a reader—or an AI answer—to prefer it.
4. Can search and AI crawlers reach the page?
Check that priority pages load correctly, are indexable, use accurate canonical URLs and receive crawlable internal links. Keep essential information visible without requiring a login.
For public content to be eligible for summaries and snippets in ChatGPT Search, OpenAI says publishers should not block OAI-SearchBot. Review the official OpenAI publisher FAQ before changing crawler rules.
Accessibility creates eligibility, not a guaranteed citation.
5. Are you checking what AI actually says?
Test a small set of customer questions every month. Record:
- Whether your business appears
- Whether the description is accurate
- Which page or source is cited
- Which competitors appear instead
- What changed after your last update
Bing’s verified AI Performance documentation explains how supported Microsoft experiences report citations, cited pages and grounding queries.
It also warns that citation totals do not represent ranking or authority.
Run this 60-second accuracy check
Ask an AI search experience three questions:
- What does our company do?
- Who is our service designed for?
- Why should a customer trust us?
Compare each answer with your website. Every missing, outdated or unsupported detail becomes a specific GEO task.
