Why My Website Isn’t Showing in ChatGPT, Claude, or Google AI?

Your website is online, but AI tools still ignore it. Use this practical nine-step check to identify crawler, indexing, content, authority and measurement problems.

Your website is online. Your services are clearly valuable. But when someone asks ChatGPT, Claude, Google AI or Perplexity for a business like yours, your company is nowhere in the answer.

This normally does not happen because of one missing keyword.

AI search visibility starts with four things: access, understanding, evidence and measurement. If an AI search system cannot reach your website, understand your offer or verify your claims, it has little reason to reference your business.

Here is how to find and fix the problem.

Quick answer

To improve your chances of appearing in AI-generated answers, your website should be:

• Online and technically accessible
• Open to the appropriate search crawlers
• Indexed by traditional search engines
• Clear about your business, services and audience
• Helpful for the questions customers actually ask
• Supported by trustworthy evidence
• Consistent with information published about you elsewhere
• Easy to navigate and understand
• Measured across repeatable customer prompts

No business or agency can guarantee a ranking, mention or citation. OpenAI says that there is no way to guarantee top placement in ChatGPT Search, while Google says that meeting its requirements does not guarantee indexing or inclusion.

Can search engines reach your website?

Before improving content, make sure your website is available.

A website that returns a server error, has a broken domain, requires a login or blocks automated visitors cannot build reliable visibility in search.

Check that:

• Your domain opens on desktop and mobile
• Important pages return a successful response
• Your SSL certificate works correctly
• Your robots.txt file does not block essential pages
• Your hosting provider or firewall is not rejecting search crawlers
• Important information appears as readable text
• Your pages are not accidentally marked noindex
• Your XML sitemap contains your important public pages

Use Google Search Console’s URL Inspection tool to check whether Google can access and index an important page. Bing Webmaster Tools can provide another view of your search visibility.

Do not begin by rewriting every blog post. Fix access and indexing problems first.

Are you allowing the correct AI search crawlers?

Different AI companies use different crawlers for search, user requests and model development.

OpenAI uses OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT Search. OpenAI distinguishes it from GPTBot, which relates to potential model training. Blocking OAI-SearchBot can prevent your content from being included in ChatGPT summaries and snippets.

Anthropic documents three relevant agents:

• Claude-SearchBot helps index content for Claude’s search results
• Claude-User retrieves pages when a user asks Claude to access them
• ClaudeBot relates to potential model development

Anthropic warns that blocking Claude-SearchBot or Claude-User may reduce your website’s visibility in relevant Claude searches.

Perplexity also states that PerplexityBot follows robots.txt instructions and will not index the full content of pages that block it.

You do not have to allow every bot for every purpose. Search access and model-training access are different decisions. Review them with your developer and privacy adviser rather than copying a robots.txt template without understanding it.

Is your website indexed in normal search?

GEO does not replace SEO.

Google explains that its generative AI features are connected to its core search ranking and quality systems. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a search snippet before it can appear as a supporting link in Google AI features.

Microsoft also says that Bing considers relevance, quality, freshness, authority and popularity when delivering search results.

Check whether:

• Your important service pages appear in Google
• Your business is discoverable in Bing
• Search engines have selected the correct canonical URL
• Your sitemap has been submitted
• Important pages receive internal links
• Old or duplicated pages are not competing with your main page

If your service page cannot be found through ordinary search, expecting consistent AI visibility is premature.

Can AI systems understand what your company does?

A beautiful website can still be unclear.

Your homepage should quickly explain:

• Who you are
• What service you provide
• Who the service is for
• Which problems you solve
• Where you operate
• What makes your approach credible
• What a visitor should do next

Avoid introductions such as:

“We build innovative solutions for the future.”

They sound impressive but reveal very little.

A clearer alternative would be:

“GAiO helps service businesses improve how their websites are discovered, understood and referenced across AI-powered search experiences.”

The second version gives search systems and customers a clear relationship between the company, service, audience and outcome.

Give every important service its own focused page. Include a clear explanation, your process, suitable clients, common questions, limitations and next step.

Does your content answer real customer questions?

AI search users often ask detailed questions instead of entering two or three keywords.

Google says that AI Mode and AI Overviews can use query fan-out—running several related searches across a topic to build an answer. This means one customer question may lead the system to investigate several smaller questions.

Create content around questions such as:

• Why is my company missing from ChatGPT recommendations?
• Can Claude access my website?
• How do I know whether an AI crawler is blocked?
• Is GEO different from SEO?
• How can I measure traffic from AI search?
• Does structured data guarantee AI citations?
• Which pages should I optimize first?

Answer the main question near the beginning of each section. Then provide the explanation, evidence, example and recommended action.

Do not publish hundreds of nearly identical pages for small keyword variations. Google recommends useful, original, people-first information and advises publishers to prioritize valuable content instead of supposed GEO hacks. [1]

Does your website offer evidence worth citing?

Repeating information already available on hundreds of websites gives an AI system little reason to choose your page.

Publish material that adds something verifiable:

• Original tests
• Real customer questions
• Clearly explained methods
• Before-and-after examples
• Screenshots with private information removed
• Expert commentary
• Checklists based on real implementation work
• Carefully sourced statistics
• Honest limitations
• Updated dates and author information

If you do not yet have a large case study, publish a transparent process example. Show how you review crawl access, page clarity, citations, external evidence and prompt visibility.

Never invent client results, traffic increases or AI rankings. A smaller amount of trustworthy evidence is more valuable than an impressive but unsupported claim.

Can other websites confirm your claims?

Your website is your own description of your company. Stronger visibility can also depend on whether the wider web supports that description.

AI search tools may search and combine information from several sources. Google describes query fan-out, while Claude says its web search processes multiple sources before producing a cited response.

This makes external consistency important.

Look for legitimate opportunities to strengthen:

• Business directory profiles
• Professional association listings
• Partner pages
• Customer reviews
• Founder and employee profiles
• Expert interviews
• Relevant podcast appearances
• Industry publications
• Original research that other publishers may reference

This does not mean buying fake mentions or creating artificial profiles. The objective is to create a consistent, verifiable public footprint.

Your business name, website, service description and contact details should not contradict one another across different sources.

Is your content structured clearly?

AI-ready content does not require robotic writing.

Use:

• One clear title
• Descriptive section headings
• Short, focused paragraphs
• Helpful lists
• Definitions when a term may be unfamiliar
• Internal links with descriptive anchor text
• Relevant images with accurate alternative text
• Author and updated-date information
• Structured data that matches the visible content

Google says there is no special Schema.org markup or additional AI text file required for inclusion in its AI features. It specifically advises prioritizing useful SEO work over unnecessary AI files and artificial GEO tactics. [1][2]

Structured data can still help search engines understand supported information, but it should accurately match what visitors can see. It does not guarantee an AI citation.

Are you measuring visibility instead of guessing?

Checking one ChatGPT answer once is not a measurement system.

Create a list of 15 to 30 questions that potential customers genuinely ask. Include:

• Problem questions
• Service comparisons
• Company recommendations
• Pricing questions
• Location-based searches
• Alternative and competitor questions
• Questions about trust, experience and suitability

Run the same questions across the AI platforms relevant to your audience. Record:

• Platform
• Date
• Prompt
• Whether your brand appeared
• How your brand was described
• Which page was cited
• Which competitors appeared
• Which external sources influenced the answer
• Whether the response led to a visit or enquiry

Answers can change between tests. Look for patterns over several weeks instead of treating one result as success or failure.

Google reports traffic from its AI features within Search Console and has introduced reporting for generative AI performance. OpenAI also adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, allowing publishers to identify some ChatGPT visits in analytics.

Mentions are not the final business result. Measure qualified visits, assessment starts, booked calls, enquiries and sales.

A simple 30-day AI visibility plan :

Week 1: Repair access

Confirm that the domain works, review robots.txt, test important URLs, check indexing and investigate firewall or CDN restrictions.

Week 2: Improve clarity

Rewrite the homepage introduction, strengthen priority service pages, add clear business information and connect important pages with internal links.

Week 3: Add evidence

Publish one detailed answer-led article, improve author information, add verified examples and identify legitimate third-party profiles or publications.

Week 4: Establish measurement

Choose your buyer prompts, record baseline results across relevant AI platforms, configure analytics and decide which gaps deserve the next content update.

Frequently asked questions

Can I guarantee that my website will appear in ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI says that top placement in ChatGPT Search cannot be guaranteed. You can improve crawl access, relevance, content quality and authority, but the platform decides which sources appear.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Technical SEO, indexability, useful content and authority remain the foundation. GEO extends that work by examining how a brand is understood, supported and represented inside generated answers.

Do I need special AI schema?

Google says that no special Schema.org structured data is required for its AI features. Use supported structured data only when it accurately represents visible information.

Should I create an llms.txt file first?

Not as your first priority. Google advises focusing on clear technical structure and unique, valuable content instead of unnecessary AI files. Fix accessibility, indexing, service clarity and evidence first.
