Why Would AI Cite Your Website? A 5-Minute GEO Test
Run this five-minute GEO test to see whether AI-powered search can access, understand, verify and accurately represent your website.
Generative Engine Optimization helps AI-powered search systems discover, understand and verify your website.
A page becomes a stronger citation candidate when it is accessible, answers a specific question clearly, supports its claims and identifies the business or author responsible for the information.
Use this five-minute test before publishing your next page.
1. Can AI search access the page?
Your page needs a sound search foundation. It should load successfully, be indexable, use the correct canonical URL and receive crawlable internal links.
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Google says there are no separate technical requirements for these features. Read Google’s official AI features guidance.
If you want public pages to be eligible for ChatGPT Search, check that your robots.txt and security services do not block OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI explains this in its publisher and developer FAQ.
Quick check: Can a visitor and an allowed crawler reach the same useful answer without logging in?
2. Does the page answer one real question quickly?
State the answer near the beginning. Then explain the reasoning, evidence and next action.
Question: What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Answer: Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of improving how a brand’s content is discovered, interpreted and represented in AI-generated answers. It combines SEO foundations with clear answers, credible evidence, entity information and ongoing measurement.
Do not create dozens of nearly identical pages for every keyword variation. Google’s generative AI guidance recommends unique, useful content and warns against scaled pages created mainly to manipulate visibility.
Quick check: Can a new visitor understand your main answer in 20 seconds?
3. Can the claim be verified?
AI systems and customers need a reason to trust your page.
Support important claims with:
- Primary sources
- Named experts
- Original examples
- Documented methods
- Real customer evidence
- Clear publication and update dates
Replace statements such as “studies prove our method works” with the study, author, date and limitations.
Never invent statistics. If a result comes from your own test, explain what you tested and what the result does not prove.
Quick check: Could an editor verify every important claim without contacting you?
4. Is the business behind the answer clear?
Identify the company, author, service and area of expertise.
Keep important business details consistent across your website and credible external profiles. Add an author biography, About page, contact information and service pages explaining exactly what you provide.
Structured data can reinforce visible information, but it should never contradict the page or replace useful content.
Quick check: Can a visitor explain who published the answer and why that source is qualified?
5. Are you measuring the right result?
A citation is useful, but it is not the final business outcome.
Track:
- Whether the page is indexed and accessible
- Whether the brand is mentioned accurately
- Whether the page receives a clickable citation
- Whether AI-referred visitors engage
- Whether those visits produce enquiries or sales
Bing’s AI Performance report can show citation activity, cited pages and grounding queries in supported Microsoft AI experiences.
Microsoft also explains that citation counts do not represent ranking, authority or placement.
Quick check: Can you connect AI visibility to a useful visitor action?
What score did your website receive?
Give your website one point for every “yes.”
- 0–2 points: Fix access, answer clarity and evidence first.
- 3–4 points: The foundation exists, but important signals need strengthening.
- 5 points: The page is ready for repeatable visibility testing.
This is a GAiO Engine planning test, not an official score used by Google, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or another platform. No score can guarantee a citation or recommendation.
